Full description: The subjects of the course are related to the comparison of the anatomy of the digestive system and the physiology of digesting in dogs and cats and to familiarize students with the nutritional behavior of these animals with their food preferences. An important point is also the characteristics of the basic components of feed for these animals, with particular emphasis on their composition and suitability in feeding certain groups of animals and the most common nutritional errors and disturbances that may be the result of feeding mistakes. Students from the practical side will compose nutritional rations and then food for dogs and cats, taking into account their physiological status, age, type of work and other factors having a key impact on the individual nutrients requirement, amino acids, vitamins and minerals as well.
Bibliography: NRC. Nutrient requirements of dogs and cats. National Academic Press Washington 2011. The Waltham book of dogs and cat nutrition 2nd edition. Ed A.T.B Edney. Pergamon press. 1988. The Waltham book of companion animal nutrition. ED. I Burger. Pergamon press. 1993.
Learning outcomes: Student knows and understands: differences in the structure of the digestive system of dogs and cats and associate these differences with different physiology of digestion and absorption of nutrients; individual components used in feeding dogs and cats taking into account their usefulness in feeding these two species of animals; the most common mistakes made in feeding dogs and cats and link them to metabolic disorders that are caused by them. Student can:select appropriate components and balance the daily food ration for dogs and cats taking into account the physiological condition of the animal; compose a recipe / composition of food for various groups of dogs and cats, taking into account their physiological condition; prevent the occurrence of nutritional errors, correct inadequate food doses, taking into account animal health.
Assessment methods and assessment criteria: The final mark of the course is a joint grade obtained by the student from the test concerning the topics of the lectures - multiple choice test, open questions - (60%) and the grade obtained from classes (40%) which is an assessment of the nutritional dose project prepared by the student (student randomly selects the species of animal with the characteristics necessary to prepare the dose).
